El Camino Real de Barichara a Guane<\/strong> es una de las caminatas con m\u00e1s peso hist\u00f3rico que puedes hacer en Colombia, y una de las m\u00e1s gratificantes precisamente porque no te pide nada m\u00e1s que la disposici\u00f3n de poner un pie delante del otro durante unas horas. Este no es un sendero de aventura.<\/strong> Es un camino patrimonial: 5,5 kil\u00f3metros de piedra puesta por los ind\u00edgenas guanes, la civilizaci\u00f3n precolombina que habit\u00f3 esta parte de las tierras altas de Santander mucho antes de la colonizaci\u00f3n espa\u00f1ola, y usado despu\u00e9s durante siglos como la ruta comercial que conectaba las comunidades de esta regi\u00f3n de ca\u00f1ones. Barichara<\/h2>\n

Los miradores al borde de Barichara merecen atenci\u00f3n especial. El sistema de ca\u00f1ones del r\u00edo Su\u00e1rez, la formaci\u00f3n geol\u00f3gica que le da a toda esta regi\u00f3n su car\u00e1cter dram\u00e1tico, cae desde el borde del pueblo en una serie de crestas y precipicios que de pronto hacen evidente la altura de las tierras altas de Santander. Pararse en el mirador antes de la caminata, con el camino a la vista bajando hacia el matorral seco, es la forma correcta de orientarse antes de empezar a moverse.<\/p>\n

El Pueblo Guane<\/h2>\n

El Camino Real no empez\u00f3 como un camino colonial. Lo construyeron los ind\u00edgenas guanes, la civilizaci\u00f3n precolombina que ocup\u00f3 las tierras altas de Santander durante siglos antes del contacto con los espa\u00f1oles. Los guanes eran tejedores h\u00e1biles, conocidos en toda la regi\u00f3n por sus textiles de algod\u00f3n y por su capacidad de cultivar el terreno seco y dif\u00edcil del sistema de ca\u00f1ones. Tambi\u00e9n eran comerciantes: el camino que conecta Barichara con Guane y m\u00e1s all\u00e1 era parte de una red de rutas por las que se mov\u00edan mercanc\u00edas, informaci\u00f3n y personas a lo largo de las tierras altas.<\/p>\n

Cuando llegaron los espa\u00f1oles, reconocieron la ingenier\u00eda pr\u00e1ctica de lo que hab\u00edan construido los guanes y la usaron ellos mismos. Comerciantes, administradores y viajeros de la Colonia recorrieron este mismo camino. El Camino Real empieza justo a las afueras de Barichara y baja por el matorral seco tropical de las tierras altas de Santander hacia Guane. El paisaje aqu\u00ed se distingue de inmediato: austero, blanqueado por el sol, con los cortes profundos del sistema de ca\u00f1ones visibles a lo lejos y una flora adaptada al calor y la aridez de la zona seca de las tierras altas. Cactus, arbustos espinosos y alg\u00fan \u00e1rbol florecido punt\u00faan un paisaje que se ve muy distinto a las laderas verdes andinas que la mayor\u00eda de los visitantes asocian con el interior de Colombia. El camino es lo bastante ancho para que dos personas caminen c\u00f3modas una al lado de la otra, y la pendiente es lo bastante suave para que se pueda conversar todo el trayecto. Esto es a prop\u00f3sito: los guanes construyeron el Camino Real para el comercio, no para el deporte, y su ingenier\u00eda refleja las necesidades pr\u00e1cticas de gente que mov\u00eda mercanc\u00edas y animales por un terreno que de otro modo ser\u00eda dif\u00edcil de recorrer. La superficie de piedra maneja la escorrent\u00eda del agua, da agarre en los tramos empinados y conserva su forma con los cambios de temperatura de las temporadas en las tierras altas. Las vistas cambian a medida que bajas. Desde los tramos altos del camino, todo el ancho del sistema de ca\u00f1ones se abre hacia el sur, con crestas superpuestas unas sobre otras en la bruma de la tarde. A medida que bajas, las paredes del ca\u00f1\u00f3n se cierran y la vegetaci\u00f3n se hace m\u00e1s densa en las ca\u00f1adas donde se acumula la humedad. Guane en s\u00ed es uno de esos lugares para los que es dif\u00edcil prepararse. Es diminuto, quiz\u00e1s unos pocos cientos de habitantes permanentes, y su plaza principal, su iglesia colonial y las calles de alrededor funcionan a un ritmo que simplemente es distinto al de cualquier otro lugar donde hayas estado en Colombia. No hay restaurantes tur\u00edsticos, ni mercados de recuerdos, ni infraestructura construida alrededor del hecho de que la gente llega caminando desde Barichara. Hay una plaza, una iglesia, un museo y esa clase de silencio que se acumula en los lugares a los que nunca les han pedido actuar para los visitantes.<\/p>\n

El Museo Paleontol\u00f3gico y de Piezas Guanes guarda una colecci\u00f3n que refleja dos aspectos del car\u00e1cter inusual del pueblo. Los f\u00f3siles (amonitas, moluscos marinos, restos de criaturas que vivieron en el mar poco profundo que cubr\u00eda esta meseta hace millones de a\u00f1os) le dan al paisaje una profundidad geol\u00f3gica que las vistas del ca\u00f1\u00f3n insin\u00faan y el museo hace expl\u00edcita. Desde distintos puntos del pueblo, el sistema de ca\u00f1ones del r\u00edo Su\u00e1rez se abre en nuevas direcciones, y la comprensi\u00f3n del paisaje que has estado recorriendo se vuelve m\u00e1s completa. El regreso: el mismo camino, una experiencia distinta<\/h2>\n

La caminata de regreso por el Camino Real es el mismo camino al rev\u00e9s, y vale decir que no se siente igual. La luz cambia a lo largo de la tarde (la claridad de la ma\u00f1ana se reemplaza por los tonos m\u00e1s c\u00e1lidos y suaves del mediod\u00eda que avanza hacia la tarde) y las vistas se abren desde otros \u00e1ngulos cuando vas cuesta arriba hacia Barichara y no cuesta abajo hacia Guane. Conoces el camino, conoces la distancia, y la mente queda libre para moverse de otra manera que en la ida.<\/p>\n
