El r\u00edo Palomino baja de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta y atraviesa el bosque costero antes de encontrarse con el mar Caribe, y flotar r\u00edo abajo en un neum\u00e1tico por sus corrientes, tramos calmados y r\u00e1pidos es una hora que de verdad se disfruta. Lo que hace diferente este tour de un tubing normal es todo lo que pasa antes de meterte al agua: una caminata de tres horas por el bosque, por el territorio ind\u00edgena de Seviaka, y una conversaci\u00f3n con un mamo kogui, un l\u00edder espiritual y guardi\u00e1n del conocimiento cuya comprensi\u00f3n de la Sierra Nevada y sus plantas representa una tradici\u00f3n que ha pasado de generaci\u00f3n en generaci\u00f3n durante siglos.<\/p>\n

C\u00f3mo llegar: en moto hasta el bosque<\/h2>\n

El d\u00eda empieza con la recogida en moto en tu hotel en Palomino o, para quienes se unen desde Santa Marta, con el encuentro a las 7:15 a. m. en el Hotel Playa Blanca, en el Rodadero, para el transporte compartido a Palomino. Desde Palomino, la moto es la \u00fanica forma de llegar al bosque, al territorio ind\u00edgena de Seviaka y a los puntos de acceso al r\u00edo. No hay carreteras hasta estos lugares. Esto no es una limitaci\u00f3n del tour: es la realidad de la geograf\u00eda, y el recorrido en moto por el bosque costero es parte de lo que hace que el d\u00eda se sienta distinto a cualquier cosa a la que se llegue en van. La transici\u00f3n del pueblo al bosque pasa r\u00e1pido, y el terreno que hay al otro lado de esa transici\u00f3n es sobre lo que se construye el resto del d\u00eda.<\/p>\n

La caminata por el bosque: tres horas en la zona de transici\u00f3n de la Sierra Nevada<\/h2>\n

La caminata de tres horas por el bosque de Palomino es la primera parte del d\u00eda y la que la mayor\u00eda de los visitantes subestima antes de vivirla. No es un sendero natural arreglado, con piso pavimentado y letreros informativos. Es terreno de bosque (condiciones cambiantes bajo los pies, ra\u00edces y piedras, humedad y sombra) en el ecosistema de transici\u00f3n entre las tierras bajas de la costa Caribe y las estribaciones de la Sierra Nevada. Esa zona de transici\u00f3n es importante ecol\u00f3gicamente: es donde se encuentran dos ambientes muy distintos, y la flora y la fauna reflejan a los dos.<\/p>\n

La Ecolog\u00eda de la Zona de Transici\u00f3n<\/h3>\n

Tu gu\u00eda te explica la fauna y la flora del sendero a medida que avanzas: las especies de plantas espec\u00edficas que crecen en esta franja de altitud, las aves de un bosque que est\u00e1 entre la costa y las monta\u00f1as, la relaci\u00f3n entre la vegetaci\u00f3n y los sistemas de agua que alimentan el r\u00edo y tambi\u00e9n a las comunidades de arriba y de abajo. La Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta es la cordillera costera m\u00e1s alta del mundo: sube desde el nivel del mar hasta casi 5.800 metros a menos de 50 kil\u00f3metros de la playa, y la compresi\u00f3n ecol\u00f3gica que eso produce crea en las estribaciones una biodiversidad que refleja todo el rango de pisos verticales de la monta\u00f1a. Aves propias del bosque de niebla de tierras altas y aves propias del bosque de tierras bajas del Caribe comparten el mismo sendero, y el gu\u00eda sabe cu\u00e1l es cu\u00e1l y por qu\u00e9 est\u00e1n aqu\u00ed.<\/p>\n

Las tres horas de sendero no son dif\u00edciles para los est\u00e1ndares de una caminata (la pendiente es manejable y el ritmo permite conversar y observar), pero son reales. El terreno es irregular, el bosque es denso en algunos tramos y la inmersi\u00f3n en el entorno es genuina, no de postal. Para cuando llegas al territorio de Seviaka, ya llevas caminando por las estribaciones de la Sierra Nevada el tiempo suficiente para tener una sensaci\u00f3n f\u00edsica de qu\u00e9 es este paisaje y lo que cuesta moverse por \u00e9l. Esa comprensi\u00f3n f\u00edsica es la preparaci\u00f3n correcta para la conversaci\u00f3n que sigue.<\/p>\n

El territorio ind\u00edgena de Seviaka: una conversaci\u00f3n con un mamo kogui<\/h2>\n

El sendero lleva al territorio ind\u00edgena de Seviaka, donde conoces al mamo, el l\u00edder espiritual y guardi\u00e1n del conocimiento de la comunidad kogui que vive all\u00ed. Los kogui son uno de los cuatro pueblos ind\u00edgenas de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (junto con los arhuacos, los kankuamos y los wiwas) que han mantenido una ocupaci\u00f3n continua de la monta\u00f1a desde antes de la conquista espa\u00f1ola. Para los kogui, la Sierra Nevada no es simplemente un accidente geogr\u00e1fico. Es el centro del mundo: un espacio sagrado que entienden como el regulador del equilibrio ecol\u00f3gico de toda la regi\u00f3n Caribe, y de cuya salud se consideran responsables.<\/p>\n

Qui\u00e9n es el Mamo y qu\u00e9 sabe<\/h3>\n

El mamo no es una figura ceremonial ni un representante cultural elegido para recibir turistas. Es el principal guardi\u00e1n del conocimiento de la comunidad, formado desde ni\u00f1o en la cosmolog\u00eda, el conocimiento de las plantas, la pr\u00e1ctica ritual y los sistemas de gobierno del pueblo kogui, por medio de un proceso de educaci\u00f3n que puede durar d\u00e9cadas. El conocimiento del mamo sobre las plantas de la Sierra Nevada (sus usos medicinales, su significado ceremonial, sus relaciones con los animales y los sistemas de agua de la monta\u00f1a) es producto de esa formaci\u00f3n y de una tradici\u00f3n que ha venido acumulando y refinando conocimiento sobre este ecosistema espec\u00edfico desde que los kogui lo habitan.<\/p>\n

La hora que pasas con la comunidad de Seviaka, escuchando al mamo hablar de sus creencias, de su relaci\u00f3n con las plantas medicinales y de c\u00f3mo entienden el mundo, no es un espect\u00e1culo cultural. Es una conversaci\u00f3n con alguien que guarda un conocimiento que no existe en ning\u00fan otro lugar, ofrecida en un contexto de intercambio genuino y no de demostraci\u00f3n montada. La decisi\u00f3n de los kogui de recibir visitantes en su territorio y compartir aspectos de su conocimiento es significativa en s\u00ed misma: refleja la convicci\u00f3n de que el resto del mundo necesita entender qu\u00e9 es la Sierra Nevada y por qu\u00e9 importa, y de que la interacci\u00f3n controlada con visitantes respetuosos es una forma de comunicarlo. Tu gu\u00eda facilita la conversaci\u00f3n y se encarga de la traducci\u00f3n y el contexto durante todo el encuentro.<\/p>\n

El r\u00edo Palomino: agua calmada, r\u00e1pidos y una hora en la corriente<\/h2>\n

Desde el territorio ind\u00edgena, la ruta sigue al r\u00edo. Tu gu\u00eda te da un neum\u00e1tico para flotar y un chaleco salvavidas, y entras al r\u00edo Palomino para el tramo r\u00edo abajo: m\u00e1s o menos una hora flotando desde el punto de entrada hasta la salida cerca de la costa. El r\u00edo tiene dos registros, y el tubing pasa por los dos.<\/p>\n

Los tramos calmados: flotar y dejarse llevar<\/h3>\n

Los tramos anchos y calmados del Palomino son donde el car\u00e1cter del r\u00edo es m\u00e1s meditativo. La corriente te mueve sin que tengas que hacer esfuerzo, el bosque se levanta en las dos orillas y el agua es lo bastante clara para ver el lecho del r\u00edo. En las ma\u00f1anas despejadas, a veces se alcanzan a ver los picos de la Sierra Nevada por encima de la l\u00ednea de los \u00e1rboles, nevados e incre\u00edblemente cerca del aire c\u00e1lido del Caribe. En estos tramos es donde la mayor\u00eda de los hu\u00e9spedes dejan de intentar hacer algo y simplemente dejan que la experiencia pase (el bosque, el agua, el silencio, el movimiento), que es la forma correcta de estar en este r\u00edo.<\/p>\n

Los r\u00e1pidos: atenci\u00f3n e impulso<\/h3>\n

Los r\u00e1pidos cambian el registro por completo. La corriente se acelera, el agua rompe contra las rocas y el tubing exige una atenci\u00f3n m\u00e1s activa: ubicarte bien, leer el agua que viene adelante, responder a las indicaciones del gu\u00eda cuando la ruta se estrecha. Los gu\u00edas est\u00e1n presentes en todos los tramos de r\u00e1pidos, manejando el grupo y la ruta con la soltura de quien conoce este r\u00edo en todas sus condiciones seg\u00fan la temporada. Los r\u00e1pidos no son peligrosos cuando se manejan bien, pero s\u00ed son de verdad entretenidos: el tipo de experiencia f\u00edsica que rompe la calidad meditativa de los tramos calmados de una forma que hace que los dos registros se distingan m\u00e1s.<\/p>\n

El tubing termina en la parte baja del r\u00edo, donde la corriente se calma a medida que el Palomino se acerca a la costa. Despu\u00e9s viene el regreso en moto a Palomino.<\/p>\n

Notas pr\u00e1cticas: qu\u00e9 llevar y c\u00f3mo funciona el d\u00eda<\/h2>\n

Lleva vestido de ba\u00f1o, toalla, una muda de ropa seca y una bolsa impermeable para el celular y los objetos de valor: todo lo que lleves al tramo del r\u00edo se va a mojar, y planearlo con anticipaci\u00f3n hace la experiencia m\u00e1s c\u00f3moda. El desayuno y el almuerzo no est\u00e1n incluidos en el precio del tour; come antes de la recogida. El d\u00eda completo dura entre cinco y ocho horas seg\u00fan tu punto de partida.
