The ride into the city is not long. It is variable, and the variables are the hour you land, the door you walk out of, and whether you arranged anything before you got on the plane. None of these are hard drives. What they are is drives where the last stretch stops being a highway, which is the part that goes wrong when the car is a gamble.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"cielo-rt\">\n<div class=\"rt\"><h3>Bogot&aacute; to Laguna de Guatavita<\/h3><p>A round lake of dark green water in a bowl of forest at about three thousand meters, an hour and a half northeast of the city. This is the lake the El Dorado legend is actually about &mdash; the Muisca covered a new chief in gold dust and floated him out to the middle of it. They are the drives people take instead of a flight, either because there is no useful flight or because the country between the two ends is the reason to go. On a road this long the difference between a private car and anything else is not comfort, it is the ability to stop, to change the plan at noon, and to have the same driver at the end of it.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"cielo-rt\">\n<div class=\"rt\"><h3>Bogot&aacute; to San Gil and Barichara<\/h3><p>North into Santander, for the canyon country. Barichara is a small town built out of the pale sandstone the ground beneath it is made of, twenty-four kilometers from San Gil and nine from the hamlet of Guane. Almost everyone flies. The colonial center is still there, and it is the one stop worth making if you are heading north by road rather than flying.
