Jos&eacute; Mar&iacute;a C&oacute;rdova (MDE) sits on a plateau above Rionegro at 2,142 meters, roughly 660 meters above the city and on the far side of a mountain from it. Every international flight lands there, and everybody then has to get down into the valley: forty-five minutes to an hour by road, through a tunnel, with a toll, at whatever hour the flight came in. That is a drive to arrange before you land, not after.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cielo-rt\"><div class=\"rt\"><h3>MDE to your hotel in Medell&iacute;n<\/h3><p>El Poblado, Laureles, Envigado, the city center &mdash; the driver meets you inside arrivals with a sign and takes you down. Both of these are short drives and both of them go badly at the wrong hour &mdash; one because everyone else in the city is doing the same thing, the other because it gets hot early and the day has to be built around that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cielo-rt\"><div class=\"rt\"><h3>Medell&iacute;n to Guatap&eacute;<\/h3><p>The day trip everyone in Medell&iacute;n takes, and most people do it badly: they reach the rock at noon with the tour buses, climb in the heat, and spend two hours of the afternoon in traffic coming home. One of them is the reason people rent a car in Colombia at all; the other is a full day on the road that most travelers fly instead, and should only be driven with a clear reason.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cielo-rt\"><div class=\"rt\"><h3>Medell&iacute;n to the Coffee Region<\/h3><p>South into the green, folded country where Caldas, Risaralda and Quind&iacute;o meet &mdash; the Eje Cafetero, with Manizales, Pereira and Armenia in a line along one road and the farms, the painted towns and the wax palms in the hills between them.
