José María Córdova, code MDE, sits on a plateau above Rionegro at 2,142 meters, roughly 660 meters higher than the city and on the far side of a mountain from it. Every international flight lands there, and every traveler then has to get down into the valley: 45 minutes to an hour by road, through a tunnel, with a toll, at whatever hour the flight came in. We meet guests at this airport all week, so this is the ride explained the way we explain it on WhatsApp: what it costs in 2026, where each option is, and which one to take depending on who you are, when you land and where you are sleeping.

The short version

There are four ways down. The airport bus, 20,000 pesos, runs 24 hours from Door 2 and leaves you in the center. The official taxi, white with a blue stripe, is a flat 132,000 pesos to the city under the 2026 tariff, from the queue outside arrivals. A private transfer, with a host waiting inside the hall, is a fixed price in dollars from 49, and it is the one to book if you land at night, travel with children or luggage, or simply do not want to think. The ride-hailing apps work in Medellín but not properly at the airport, where drivers are not authorized and pick up from a distant parking lot. Whatever you choose, the road is the same: the Túnel de Oriente, 8.2 kilometers long, then the descent into El Poblado.

Two airports, one city

Medellín has two. José María Córdova, MDE, in Rionegro, takes every international flight and the main domestic jet routes. Olaya Herrera, EOH, sits inside the city in the southwest and handles regional flights on small aircraft, with Satena and Clic among the carriers, plus charters. If you are connecting from an international arrival to a regional flight, look at the airport code on the second ticket before you book it: MDE to EOH is a taxi ride across a mountain and a city, not a walk to another gate. From Olaya Herrera you are minutes from El Poblado and Laureles; from José María Córdova you are an hour from the same hotel. Which of the two to fly into from Bogotá, and what the flight, the bus and the road cost, is in our Bogotá to Medellín guide.

From the plane to the curb

Colombia asks every traveler to complete the free Check-Mig form on Migración Colombia’s website between 72 hours and one hour before the flight, on arrival and again on departure; do it before you board and you save a conversation at the booth. Immigration at MDE is where patience is spent. When two or three international flights land together, travelers report queues of an hour and three quarters to three hours; arrivals after about eight in the evening often clear in five to twenty-five minutes. Passengers aged 60 and over have a priority line along the left-hand wall, and Canadian passport holders are sent to a separate desk. The airport is adding automated Biomig gates to arrivals during the 2026 works, from seven to ten, which should shorten the worst of it.

Baggage and customs are on the arrivals level, and then you are in the public hall. This is where drivers with name signs wait, inside, not at the curb: international arrivals if you flew in from abroad, domestic arrivals if you flew in from Bogotá or the coast. The buses leave from Door 2. The taxis for the town of Rionegro itself wait at Door 3. The taxi queue for Medellín is outside the arrivals exit. The terminal is open all night, and so are the bus and the taxi line.

The official taxi: a flat fare, not a meter

The taxis allowed to take you to Medellín are white with a blue stripe, and their drivers carry an airport identification card. Take the next car in the queue and do not negotiate, because the airport run is a flat rate set by the city: under the Alcaldía de Medellín’s tariff in force since February 2, 2026, the trip between the city and the airport is 132,000 pesos in a standard taxi, 134,100 in an electric one and 143,100 in a luxury one. Confirm the number before the bags go in the trunk, have the cash ready, and ignore anyone inside the hall offering to walk you to a car: that is the premium version of the same ride. For one or two people landing in daylight with a hotel in El Poblado, the taxi is a perfectly good choice.

The bus: 20,000 pesos, all night, through the tunnel

Combuses runs the airport service around the clock from Door 2 on the arrivals level, direct through the Túnel de Oriente with no stops, to Estación Exposiciones and San Diego in Medellín. The fare has been 20,000 pesos since January 1, 2026, and the Cívica metro card works on board. From Exposiciones you are on Line A of the metro, two stops from Poblado station, for another 4,400 pesos with a bearer card; a taxi from San Diego to a hotel in El Poblado or Laureles is short. Other intermunicipal buses leave from the same door and from the departures level by way of Las Palmas and the Autopista to the northern and southern terminals; they are cheaper, slower, and the fare is posted on the bus. The bus is the right answer for a solo traveler with a backpack landing in daylight, and a poor one for a family at midnight.

The apps: Uber, DiDi and Cabify at MDE

Ride-hailing apps operate in Medellín in a legal grey zone, and the airport authorizes only its own taxi and bus operators. In practice that means no app car at the doors: if the driver accepts, you meet far away in a parking lot with your bags; if the driver thinks better of it, the trip is cancelled while you stand there. The fare is dynamic and often no cheaper than the flat taxi rate once the wait is counted. In the city the apps are fine; at the airport they are the option we would not plan a night arrival around.

The private transfer, and when it is worth it

A pre-booked transfer changes the arrival in three ways. A host meets you inside the hall with a Safe Transfers sign, at any hour, so nobody is negotiating at a curb at one in the morning. The price is fixed in dollars before you fly, from 49, and it does not move with traffic or the peso. And the flight is tracked, not the clock: if fog holds your aircraft in Bogotá for two hours, the pickup moves with it and costs nothing extra. Our transfers in Medellín are operated by Safe Transfers by Cielo.Travel, our own transfer company, with verified drivers and the vehicle confirmed before you board; you can see the prices and book a Medellín airport transfer on their site. Whether it matters depends on the arrival: alone, in daylight, with one bag and a hotel in El Poblado, the taxi is fine. At night, with children, with a group, with a fog forecast or after a long-haul flight, the transfer is the part of the trip you will be glad you did not improvise.

The descent from Rionegro is one road of five. Every Medellín transfer route we drive is on one page, with the booker on it — the airport, Guatapé from the terminal or from the city, Santa Fe de Antioquia, the Coffee Region and the long road to Cartagena.

Airport transfer by Safe Transfers, our transfer company

A host inside arrivals, a fixed price, your flight tracked.

Private transfer from José María Córdova to any hotel in Medellín, 24 hours a day, from 49 dollars. The Túnel de Oriente opened in August 2019, runs 8.2 kilometers through the mountain, and cut the airport-to-city trip from about an hour and a half on the old roads to around 45 minutes; the toll for a car is 26,300 pesos each way in 2026, and it is the way nearly every taxi, bus and transfer goes. From the airport to Parque Lleras is 22 kilometers by that route: 35 minutes with clear roads, 45 to 60 in normal traffic, more in the morning and evening peaks. The old Las Palmas road climbs over the ridge instead, slower and also tolled, and it is the route you want when the tunnel backs up or when it is closed for maintenance, which happens on some nights from ten in the evening to four in the morning, usually for a few nights in a row. A late arrival on one of those nights takes twenty to thirty minutes longer, and a driver who knows the Palmas road in the dark is worth more than the toll saved.

Where you are staying changes the ride

El Poblado. Where most visitors sleep: 45 to 60 minutes from the airport, longer in the evening peak.

Still choosing the neighborhood? Our guide to where to stay in Medellín compares El Poblado, Laureles, Envigado and Sabaneta, including how each one sits for this ride.

Laureles and Estadio. Across the river to the west; count on the top of that range.

Envigado and Sabaneta. South of El Poblado on the same tunnel route; similar to El Poblado.

The center and Comuna 13. The bus lands you nearby at San Diego and Exposiciones; a taxi from there is short.

Llanogrande and Rionegro. The country hotels and wedding fincas on the airport's own plateau: a short drive, no tunnel, and a cool night.

Guatapé. The airport sits on the Guatapé side of the mountains, so going straight from the terminal to the reservoir saves the round trip through the city. Safe Transfers runs a direct transfer from Medellín airport to Guatapé, and our Guatapé guide explains what to do once you are there.

Fog: the delay this airport is known for

The Rionegro plateau is high and humid, and in the early morning fog settles on the runway, especially in the wetter months. When visibility drops the airport restricts operations: arrivals hold in the air or divert, usually to Bogotá, and departures wait. It happened on March 31 and April 1, 2026, again on July 2, and again on July 22, when flights were cancelled, delayed and diverted before the sky cleared by mid-morning. The practical rules: an early-morning arrival is the one most likely to slip, an early-morning departure the one most likely to leave you sitting in the check-in hall, and whoever is meeting you should be tracking the flight number rather than the printed time. Check your flight with the airline before you leave the hotel on a grey morning.

Going back up

The trip to the airport is the same road in reverse, and the variable is the evening peak: from El Poblado the approach to the tunnel can add half an hour between five and eight, from Laureles or the north of the city more. Plan two hours before a domestic flight and three before an international one, add margin while the 2026 terminal works are running, and complete Check-Mig for departure. Foreign travelers can use the Biomig automated gates on the way out without enrolling first, unless they are traveling with children, in which case it is the staffed booth. And check the airport code on the boarding pass one more time: Satena and Clic leave from Olaya Herrera in the city, not from Rionegro.

Your first day, once you are down

Do not schedule Guatapé for the day you land. The rock has to be climbed before ten in the morning to be worth climbing, and an arrival day rarely allows it. Use the first afternoon for the city: a walk in El Poblado or Laureles, an early dinner, sleep. The downtown walking tour leaves every day at ten and is the right first morning; Comuna 13 with a guide who lives there is the right second one. Our guide to things to do in Medellín puts the rest in order, with 2026 prices, and our Colombia itinerary shows where Medellín fits in a trip that continues to Bogotá, the coffee region or Cartagena.

Once you are in the city, the rules that keep visitors out of trouble are short; we put them, with the 2026 numbers, in our guide to whether Medellín is safe.

Private city tour of Medellín

The center, the comuna and the museum, in one day.

A car, a guide and a full day: San Antonio Park, Plaza Botero and the Palacio de la Cultura in the morning, then Comuna 13 with someone who can read the walls.
