It is the city most travelers add to a Colombia trip after Cartagena and Bogotá, and the one they most often misjudge, usually by booking three nights and spending two of them in El Poblado. We run twelve tours in and around Medellín, from a morning in the old center to the coffee towns of Antioquia, so this is the guide we give our own travelers before they land: what the city is and how it is laid out, the metro and what it costs a foreigner, how to get in from the airport, where to sleep, what is worth your time, when to come, and how long to stay.

The short version

Give Medellín three nights, four if you want Guatapé or a coffee town without rushing. Sleep in El Poblado if you want restaurants on your doorstep, Laureles if you want the city rather than the expat version of it, and read our neighborhood guide before you book either. Learn the metro on day one: one line runs the length of the valley, one crosses it, and five cable lines climb the slopes; a ride costs 3,820 pesos with a Cívica card, except the cable to Parque Arví, where a foreign visitor pays 26,700. Come down to the old center with a guide rather than alone, do Comuna 13 in the morning, and keep one day free for the road out of the valley. Rain is heaviest in May and October and lightest in January; the Feria de las Flores fills the city and its hotels in the first days of August. The airport is 22 kilometers east and up, on a different plateau, and the ride takes 35 to 60 minutes.

Where Medellín is

Medellín sits in the Valle de Aburrá, a narrow north–south valley in the Cordillera Central, at 6°13′55″ north and 75°34′05″ west. The Alcaldía puts the city at 1,479 meters above sea level with an average temperature of 24 degrees, across 376.4 square kilometers: 111.61 of urban land, 263.04 rural and 1.75 of planned expansion. Administratively it is 16 comunas, 5 corregimientos, 249 official barrios and 52 veredas, plus 20 institutional areas and 7 expansion zones.

The valley floor is flat and narrow; the city ran out of it decades ago and grew up the sides. The comunas on the slopes are steep enough that a bus route is a poor answer and a cable car is a good one, which is why Medellín has five of them. Everything a visitor does in this city is shaped by that geography: the metro runs along the river on the floor of the valley, and everything else either drops down to it or hangs above it.

Medellín is also the nucleus of a metropolitan area of ten municipalities, and the boundaries are not where visitors assume. Envigado and Sabaneta, which you will see described as Medellín neighborhoods, are separate municipalities in the Valle de Aburrá with their own mayors. The metro crosses six of them. Antioquia, the department, holds about 12 percent of Colombia’s population and produces about 15 percent of its GDP, and Medellín is where that concentration lives.

How the city got here

The Spanish founded San Lorenzo de Aburrá in 1616, one of seven indigenous resguardos in the region. The town itself was established on 2 November 1675 as the Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Medellín, by royal decree of Queen Mariana of Austria issued the year before, and it took its name from Don Pedro Portocarrero, count of the Spanish town of Medellín, in thanks for his help getting the foundation approved by the Council of the Indies. It became the capital of Antioquia province in 1826. In 2026 the city is 351 years old.

The version of that history most visitors arrive with is the one from the late 1980s and early 1990s, and Medellín has spent thirty years living with it. The city’s own account of itself now runs through the metro, the cable cars, the library parks and the escalators in Comuna 13, and you will hear it from every guide you hire here. It is a real transformation and it is also a sales pitch; both things are true. What is not in dispute is that a city which built a rail system in the middle of its worst years finished it and still runs it well. Our guide to whether Medellín is safe deals with the present-day picture and the city’s own numbers, not the myth in either direction.

The metro is the thing to understand first

Commercial service began on 30 November 1995, at eleven in the morning, on the first stretch of Line A between Niquía and Poblado. It remains the only metro in Colombia. Line A runs 21 stations along the valley floor beside the river, from Niquía in the north to La Estrella in the south. Line B crosses west from San Antonio to San Javier in 7 stations. Everything else hangs off those two.

The cable lines came later and each one has a date: Line K to the northeast on 7 August 2004, Line J to the west on 3 March 2008, Line L — the Cable Arví, the tourist line — in February 2010, Line H to the east on 17 December 2016, and Line P to El Picacho on 10 June 2021. The Ayacucho tram opened on 31 March 2016 with six stops and three stations. The operator’s own history page counts 76 stations in all: 27 train, 11 cable, 9 tram and 28 bus rapid transit, across the six municipalities of Bello, Medellín, Itagüí, Envigado, Sabaneta and La Estrella, and more than 4,995 million passengers carried since 1995.

Trains run from 4:30 in the morning to 11 at night Monday to Saturday, and from 5 to 10 on Sundays and holidays. The system is clean, punctual and busy, and it is the fastest way to move north–south in this city at almost any hour.

What it costs to ride, and the one fare that surprises people

A single journey with a Cívica card costs 3,820 pesos. An occasional ticket, the one you buy at a window without a card, costs 4,400. Integrated journeys that combine modes rise through the tiers to 6,070. Those are the 2026 fares published by the operator.

The exception is Line L, the cable up to Parque Arví, which is priced as a tourist ride and not as transport. The operator’s table lists three tariffs by name: Tarifa Estratos 1, 2 y 3 at 3,900 pesos for residents of the Valle de Aburrá who can prove it, Tarifa Nacionales y/o personalizados at 11,900, and Tarifa Extranjeros y/o General at 26,700. If you are a foreign visitor riding up to Arví, budget 26,700 each way, not 3,820. Nobody tells you this at the turnstile and it is the single most common fare surprise in the city.

Buy a Cívica card if you are here more than two days. The card itself is sold at station windows, it is what the 3,820 fare requires, and it is also what the 11,900 tariff on Line L requires for Colombians.

Getting in from the airport

José María Córdova, the international airport, is not in Medellín. It is about 22 kilometers east, on the Rionegro plateau at 2,142 meters — roughly 660 meters higher than the city — and the road between the two drops off the edge of the plateau into the valley. Since 2019 it goes through the Túnel de Oriente, 8.2 kilometers long, with a toll of 26,300 pesos. Reckon 35 minutes to El Poblado through the tunnel and 45 to 60 in normal conditions.

Your options are the official taxi at a 2026 flat tariff of 132,000 pesos city to airport, the direct shuttle bus at 20,000, an app car, or a private transfer booked in advance. We hand the airport ride to Safe Transfers, which is the same company and does nothing but ground transport. The full comparison, option by option with the current prices, is in our Medellín airport guide. Olaya Herrera, the small airport inside the city, handles regional flights and is the one the weather station at 1,490 meters is named after.

From Bogotá, the flight is about an hour and the road is about 420 kilometers and eight to nine hours. Bogotá–Medellín is the busiest domestic route in Latin America, with more than 6.2 million scheduled seats in 2025, so fares are competitive and departures are frequent. We compare the three ways of doing it in our Bogotá to Medellín guide.

Book the drive down from the airport

José María Córdova is not in Medellín. It sits above Rionegro on the far side of a mountain, and everybody who lands there has to get down into the valley. That is a drive to arrange before you land, not after.

The airport run and every route out of the valley are on Medellín transfers.

Driving here, and pico y placa

If you rent a car or drive your own, Medellín restricts circulation by the last digit of the plate. The rotation that began on Monday 3 August 2026 runs Monday 5 and 8, Tuesday 1 and 4, Wednesday 0 and 2, Thursday 3 and 6, Friday 7 and 9, Monday to Friday between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. It does not apply on weekends or holidays, or in the city's corregimientos. It covers cars, camionetas, camperos, motocarros, cuatriciclos and motorcycles; taxis run on their own two-weekly schedule between 6 in the morning and 8 at night. Registered electric, hybrid and gas vehicles are exempt, as are delivery motorcycles.

One note: the Secretaría de Movilidad's published rule does not address contracted transport — transporte especial — either way. Anyone who tells you a private transfer is automatically exempt is telling you something the city has not published. Ask your operator how they handle it.

Where to stay

El Poblado is where most visitors land: up the eastern slope, dense with restaurants, hotels and the nightlife around Parque Lleras. It is comfortable, expensive by Colombian standards and not very Colombian. Laureles, west of the river and flat, is where you go if you want a neighborhood, not a scene, and it has its own restaurants and a metro line. Envigado and Sabaneta are quieter, cheaper and separate towns. The old center is not where we would put a visitor overnight. We compare all of them, with the trade-offs, in where to stay in Medellín.

One legal point that applies anywhere in Colombia: any property renting to tourists must hold a Registro Nacional de Turismo, and you can check a number yourself, free and without an account, at rnt.confecamaras.co. Medellín adds its own requirements for short-term rentals in buildings under horizontal property rules. If a listing cannot produce an RNT number, that is a reason to look elsewhere.

What is worth your time

The short answer: the old center with a guide, Comuna 13 in the morning, one cable car ride, one green space, and one day out of the valley. Check the day before you plan: our own tour page for the Jardín Botánico and Parque Arví notes that both close on Mondays, and the garden also on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. The long answer, with prices and with the things we would skip, is in things to do in Medellín.

The center holds Plaza Botero and the Museo de Antioquia, which faces it at Carrera 52 No. 52-43 and opens Monday to Saturday from 9:40 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sundays and holidays from 9:40 to 4:30, closed on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. It is a working downtown, not a preserved colonial quarter, and it rewards a guide. Comuna 13 is the other thing everyone comes for, and going early instead of in the afternoon is the difference between a neighborhood and a crowd.

Where the night happens in this city, what time the bars close after the August 2026 court ruling, and how you get home once the metro has stopped is in our Medellín nightlife guide.

With us

Our Medellín city tour is the seven-hour version of the day above: San Antonio Park, Botero Square, the Palacio de la Cultura and the center on foot with a guide who can read it for you, hotel to hotel, in English or Spanish. If you would rather go up than across, the Botanical Garden, Metrocable and Arví Park tour takes six hours and puts the Line L fare, the park and the garden into one arranged day. The whole of it, the road, the farm, the basilica after the August 2026 earthquake and the risk in the countryside, is in our Jardín guide.

Santa Fe de Antioquia has its own guide: the heat by IDEAM's numbers, the tunnel and the toll, the bridge you now cross on foot and what the August 2026 earthquake did to the churches, in our Santa Fe de Antioquia guide.

When to come

Medellín has no seasons in the temperate sense. At Olaya Herrera, at 1,490 meters, the IDEAM normals for 1991–2020 give 1,758.4 millimeters of rain a year spread over 173.4 days, a mean temperature between 22.0 degrees in November and 24.0 in July, highs between 27.1 and 28.7 and lows between 17.4 and 18.0. May is the wettest month at 218.9 millimeters, then October at 211.5 and April at 181.2; January is the driest at 71.5 and February second at 80.7. Rain here is an afternoon event, not a day-long one, and it almost never costs you a whole day. The month-by-month table and the packing list are in our Medellín weather guide.

The calendar matters more than the rain. The Feria de las Flores ran from 31 July to 9 August in 2026 and closed with the 69th Desfile de Silleteros on 9 August; the fair has run since 1957 and the Alcaldía counted five million people at the 2026 edition, with 120 free events over ten days. If you want it, book months out and expect hotel prices to move; if you do not, avoid those dates. The rest of the 2026 city calendar published by the Alcaldía: the Festival Internacional de Tango from 3 to 8 June, the Fiesta del Libro y la Cultura from 11 to 20 September, Altavoz from 10 to 12 October, and the Festival de Navidad "Medellín Te Quiere" from 27 November to 13 December, which is when the Christmas lights go up along the river. Dates for the following year are published by the Alcaldía in the spring, so check instead of assuming.

Money, language and the practical bits

The currency is the Colombian peso and cards work in almost everything a visitor uses; keep cash for taxis, small restaurants and the towns outside the city. Colombia runs on UTC−5 year round with no daylight saving. Spanish is the language and English is common in El Poblado and rare four blocks off it. Tipping in restaurants is the propina voluntaria, usually 10 percent, and the server must ask before adding it. The tap water is safe to drink: EPM, the city's utility, reported a water-quality risk index of 1.06 percent for 2024 against a national threshold of five. Altitude is not an issue here the way it is in Bogotá: at 1,479 meters you will notice nothing.

How long, and is it worth it

Three nights is the minimum: one day for the center and Comuna 13, one for a cable car and a green day, one out of the valley. Four lets you do Guatapé or Jardín without compressing the city. A week here only makes sense if you are working, studying Spanish or using Medellín as a base for Antioquia, which plenty of people do.

Is it worth it? Yes, but not for the reason most itineraries give. Medellín is not a beautiful city in the way Cartagena is, and if you come expecting a colonial center you will be disappointed by lunchtime. What it has is a temperature that never moves, a public transport system that is interesting to ride, food and coffee that beat both Bogotá and the coast for the money, and mountains an hour away in three directions. It is the easiest big city in Colombia to be in. Where it fits in a longer trip is set out in our Colombia itinerary.

Questions travelers ask

How many days do you need in Medellín?

Three nights for the city and one day out of the valley. Four if you want Guatapé or Jardín at a sane pace. Two is enough only if you skip the day trip entirely.

How much is the metro?

3,820 pesos a journey with a Cívica card, 4,400 on an occasional ticket, up to 6,070 for integrated journeys. The cable to Parque Arví on Line L is priced separately: 26,700 pesos for foreign visitors, 11,900 for Colombians with a personalized card, 3,900 for Valle de Aburrá residents in strata 1 to 3.

Is El Poblado the best place to stay?

It is the easiest, not the best. Laureles gives you a real neighborhood at lower prices with the same metro access. Our neighborhood guide compares them properly.

How far is the airport from Medellín?

About 22 kilometers east and 660 meters higher, on the Rionegro plateau. Thirty-five minutes to El Poblado through the Túnel de Oriente, 45 to 60 in normal traffic. The official taxi tariff for 2026 is 132,000 pesos and the shuttle bus is 20,000.

What is the best month to visit Medellín?

January, if you want the least rain — 71.5 millimeters against 218.9 in May. But the temperature barely moves all year, so the calendar matters more than the weather. Avoid the first days of August unless the Feria de las Flores is why you are coming.

Do I need a guide for Comuna 13?

You do not need one to walk up the escalators, but you will understand very little without one, and the difference in what you get out of the morning is large. We run a private version.

Is Medellín safe for tourists?

It is a large Latin American city with the risks that implies, concentrated in specific places and specific hours. The answer, with the city's own figures and the situations that catch visitors out, is in our is Medellín safe guide.

Plan it with us

We are a Colombian company with our own guides and drivers in Antioquia, and we will tell you when a day does not work.
