Where Bogotá’s LGBTQ+ Crowd Hits the Beach (And Why You Should, Too)

One of our favorite Colombian rituals? Heading to the beach.

We know a quick coastal getaway can do wonders—and if you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community, you want to find an accepting destination where you can kick back and be yourself.

Here are our top picks for inclusive beach destinations that Bogotá’s LGBTQ+ community loves.

1. “Hollywood Beach”

Just a one-hour flight from Bogotá, Cartagena is Colombia’s crown jewel of coastal travel. It’s also home to Bocagrande, a modern beachfront district that combines walkable sands, breezy cafés, and a casual, welcoming energy.

There’s no “rainbow flag zone” here, but locals and international visitors have claimed a part of Bocagrande unofficially dubbed Hollywood Beach, near Hotel Caribe. On weekends, this stretch comes alive with stylish crowds, groups of friends, and couples soaking in the sun or walking hand-in-hand along the shore. While it’s not a “gay beach” in name, it has become one in nature.

It’s also a great follow-up to a night out in Cartagena’s LGBTQ+ clubs or bars—you can stroll right from your hotel and land on the sand before your coffee wears off.

Who It’s Great For: Urban beach lovers who want a social scene without having to seek out a rainbow sticker. Think “comfortable visibility” over exclusivity.

Local Tip: Claim a towel spot near one of the beachfront cafés, order a michelada or fruit cocktail, and let the world pass by.

2. Bocagrande

If you’re flying in from Bogotá and looking to keep it simple, Bocagrande itself is still your best base beachside. This district stretches along the Cartagena coast, with high-rises on one side and easy-going beaches on the other. It’s convenient, central, and LGBTQ+ friendly without needing to be labeled that way.

What we love most is the mellow atmosphere. Compared to the party intensity you’ll find elsewhere in the Caribbean or even in parts of Cartagena, Bocagrande strikes a balance.

Who It’s Great For: Travelers seeking a low-maintenance beach fix with just the right amount of community comfort.

Local Tip: Catch golden hour—the sky softens, the light glows warm on the water, and everything feels timeless.

3. Rosario Islands

Just a boat ride from Cartagena’s harbor, the Islas del Rosario are the stuff of Instagram dreams—crystal waters, palm-fringed shores, and enough seclusion to fully exhale.

But here’s the best part: even without a rainbow flag in sight, these islands feel welcoming in the most grounded, respectful way. Members of the LGBTQ+ community are treated just like any other visitors enjoying a mojito and the turquoise view.

Who It’s Great For: Nature lovers, couples, or quiet travelers who want queer comfort without crowds or noise.

Local Tip: Book an early boat (8–9 a.m.) for calmer seas and more hours in paradise. If you can, stay overnight—sunset here is an entirely different kind of magic.

4. Palomino

Tucked along Colombia’s northern Caribbean coast, Palomino is a beach town with a barefoot soul—and it’s increasingly on the radar of LGBTQ+ travelers seeking something quieter, more soulful, and naturally inclusive. While not a “gay hotspot,” this beach—just a 90-minute flight away from Bogotá—draws a diverse, open-minded crowd: solo travelers, couples, artists, and digital nomads who value community over scene.

The vibe here is unapologetically boho: hammocks, eco-lodges, live music at sunset, and firelit beach bars. You’ll find queer couples strolling the long shoreline or sharing drinks under string lights—no stares, no judgment, just shared space.

The ocean is wild (not ideal for swimming), but the energy is calm, warm, and quietly embracing. If Cartagena feels too polished and the islands too remote, Palomino strikes that balance: easy-going, welcoming, and deeply restorative.

Who It’s Great For: LGBTQ+ travelers craving nature, creative energy, and low-key beach time—without clubs or curated experiences.

Local Tip: Book a beachside cabin at an eco-hotel like Casa del Pavo Real, known for being inclusive, beautifully designed, and ideal for couples. And don’t miss tubing down the Palomino River at sunset—it’s a slow float that ends right at the beach.

Are Colombia’s Beaches Safe for LGBTQ+ Travelers?

Colombia has become one of the most progressive countries in Latin America for LGBTQ+ rights. Marriage equality? Legal. Anti-discrimination protections? In place. The coast may be more casual than visibly activist, but you’ll find a foundation of safety and respect in most tourist areas.
