Overview

Hike through a former quarry turned 2,700-hectare Andean sanctuary on this private Ecopalacio Chingaza tour from Bogotá. With pickup at 6:30 AM, you’ll drive east through La Calera and into the highland páramo surrounding Chingaza National Park — a protected Ramsar wetland site that supplies 70–80% of the capital’s drinking water. The trail follows the Rincón del Oso route through cloud forest draped in mosses and ferns before opening into the páramo plateau, where ancient frailejones of the species Espeletia uribei stand in dense formations, each one growing just one centimeter per year.

The hike climbs approximately 500 meters to the Peñas Blancas summit, the former quarry face now surrounded by recovering vegetation and sweeping views of the Andean valley. Along the way, your bilingual guide tracks signs of the Andean spectacled bear — South America’s largest land carnivore — while pointing out species from the reserve’s 186 documented birds, including high-altitude hummingbirds and cloud forest tanagers. A locally prepared mountain snack is served at the viewpoint before the descent and return to your Bogotá hotel.

  • Walk among Espeletia uribei frailejones, a species of giant groundsel unique to this reserve and found nowhere else on earth in this form.

Know before you book

  • Pickup is at 6:30 AM from your hotel or selected accommodation. Be at the main entrance or lobby on time — early departure is essential for the best trail conditions and light.

  • Hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes with grip are required. The terrain includes uneven páramo ground, stream crossings, and steep sections near the summit. Trainers or sneakers are not suitable for this trail.

  • Bring a waterproof rain jacket. Chingaza is one of Colombia's wettest highland ecosystems and rain can arrive quickly at any time of day, even on clear mornings.

  • The trail reaches 3,100+ meters above sea level. If you are arriving in Bogotá from sea level, allow at least one day for altitude acclimatization before this hike. Pace yourself on the ascent and stay hydrated.

  • This tour is rated Moderate. It involves approximately 7 kilometers of hiking with 500+ meters of elevation gain. Reasonable trail fitness is required — this is not a strenuous technical climb, but it is a full-day physical commitment.

  • Single-use plastics are not permitted inside the reserve. Bring a reusable water bottle (minimum 1 liter) and avoid plastic-wrapped snacks. No pets, alcohol, cigarettes, or drones allowed inside the park.

  • The English-speaking guide must be selected as an option at the time of booking. If not selected, the guide will be Spanish-speaking.

FAQs

How difficult is this hike? Do I need prior hiking experience?

The trail is rated Moderate. You'll cover approximately 7 kilometers with around 500 meters of elevation gain, reaching over 3,100 meters above sea level. No technical skills are required, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven terrain. If you hike occasionally and have reasonable fitness, you'll manage this trail well. Allow a day in Bogotá to acclimatize to altitude before the tour if you're arriving from sea level.

Will I see the Andean bear?

The Andean spectacled bear lives freely in the Ecopalacio Reserve and signs of their presence — tracks, claw marks, feeding sites — are common on the trails. An actual sighting is possible but cannot be guaranteed; the bear is elusive by nature. Your guide knows where to look and will identify any evidence of recent activity along the route.

Is the English guide included in the base price?

The English-speaking guide is an optional add-on that must be selected at the time of booking. The standard tour includes a Spanish-speaking certified local guide. If you need English, make sure to select the English Guide option when you book — or contact us directly to confirm availability.

What should I bring?

Hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes with grip (required — not optional), a waterproof rain jacket, layered clothing for cold and wind, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle with at least 1 liter of water, and a camera. Single-use plastics are not permitted inside the reserve. Lunch is not included — eat a solid breakfast before departure.

What is the Ecopalacio Reserve? Is it different from Chingaza National Park?

Ecopalacio is a 2,700-hectare private nature reserve located at the boundary of Chingaza Natural National Park. It was an active cement and limestone quarry from 1933 until 1999 and has since undergone a remarkable ecological restoration. It now has 186 documented bird species, native mammals including Andean bears and deer, and one of the best-preserved stands of Espeletia uribei frailejones in the region. Because it's a private reserve rather than the national park itself, access is more controlled and the experience more exclusive.

How far in advance do I need to book?

Bookings must be made at least 2 days in advance. This allows time to issue the reserve entry permit and confirm your English guide if selected. Last-minute requests can sometimes be accommodated — contact us directly via WhatsApp to check availability.
