Overview

Ciudad Perdida — the Lost City — was built by the Tayrona civilization between the 6th and 10th centuries AD, predating Machu Picchu by several hundred years and remaining so completely hidden by the Sierra Nevada jungle that the wider world didn’t know of its existence until 1972. Today access is managed by the four indigenous communities whose ancestral territory it occupies — the Kogi, Arhuaco, Kankuamo, and Wiwa — with strictly controlled daily visitor numbers and no way in except four days on foot through one of the most biodiverse mountain ecosystems on earth. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the world’s highest coastal mountain range, rising from sea level to over 5,700 meters within 50 kilometers of the Caribbean coast, and the trail runs through its middle — humid lowland jungle giving way to highland rainfall and temperature swings as you follow the Buritaca River deeper into the range.

The site itself is reached on day three via a 1,200-step stone staircase built by the Tayrona as the city’s formal entrance. Circular stone terraces, ceremonial platforms, and the foundations of a complex urban society spread across several square kilometers of hillside cleared from the jungle — stonework over a thousand years old, built by a civilization the Spanish colonial record barely mentions, surrounded by cloud and forest in a place most of the world still hasn’t heard of. The return on day four brings you back to Santa Marta with a different relationship to your own physical capabilities than when you left. Waterproof boots, a rain layer, and good physical condition are not optional — everything else is handled.

  • Hike alongside the Buritaca River for an entire day through the greenery of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — the highest coastal mountain range in the world with snowcapped summits — and understand why this landscape is the ancestral territory of the Kogi, Arhuaco, Kankuamo, and Wiwa native communities.
